‘Relax norms on paddy procurement’

Holding the State machinery responsible for the loss incurred by farmers from East and West Godavari districts owing to incessant rain, Bharatiya Janata Kisan Morcha general secretary Y. Malakondaiah has demanded that the government relax norms pertaining to paddy procurement immediately and help farmers by purchasing wet and discoloured paddy at minimum support price.

Mr. Malakondaiah flayed officials for not following schedules on release of water into irrigation canals in the Godavari districts.

“There was a delay in water release for the present kharif too, and this is the reason why farmers incurred losses owing to sudden rain. Had officials released water in time, farmers would have completed crop cutting by now,” he said.

Accusing members of Janmabhoomi committees of taking bribes from those eligible for the housing scheme, he said the Centre had sanctioned two lakh dwellings to the State, but local leaders seldom mentioned the initiative.
