Green cover

The devastation wrought on the City of Destiny by cyclone Hudhud needs to be taken as a challenge to rebuild the city. The new LED streetlights and cables being laid underground give it a good look. By planting fragrant flowering plants on the road dividers would add to the beauty. The city has the ability to become a smart city, but in the name of technology and advancement let us not forget our green cover.

Restructure VUDA

VUDA, which is expected to be made into Visakhapatnam Metro Development Authority headed by the Chief Minister, has a significant role in the transformation of Visakhapatnam into a smart city. Unfortunately, VUDA has a poor track record. For example, it has not been able to sell its row houses in Rushikonda and its Harita housing project is yet to be completed leaving the buyers in the lurch. The government should take note of the problems and restructure the organisation and place efficient officers at the helm of affairs to help it play its expected role.

Water tax arrears

GVMC, which is facing an acute financial crunch, has to step up its collection of water tax arrears. Show financial

discipline

Under the AP Reorganisation Act 2014, the State has to get a special package and also funds to compensate for the loss of revenue post- bifurcation.

The political leadership of the BJP at the Centre and the TDP in the State have to put into action the promises made in the Act. The TDP government, which claims that it does not have funds to pay salaries, has made no effort to show financial discipline.
