Cultural programmes precede the colourful event

Lord Malayappa, dressed in fine silk attires and seated atop the beaming golden Surya Prabha in the yoga mudra posture was taken out in a grand procession much to the delight of thousands of devotees who assembled on either side of the mada streets. The Bihu dance by members of Sri Srinivasa Yuva Bhajan Mandali from Chikmagalur, Chanda melam by artistes of Palimar mutt in Karnataka and Pandava folk dance by the cultural troop from Uttarakhand that preceded the royal parade were the cynosure of all eyes.

The day was also marked by special rituals like Snapana Thirumanjanam to the deities and presentation of golden umbrella by the erstwhile mirasidars of Kalyanakatta. The golden umbrella, which will be fixed atop the mammoth wooden chariot for Rathotsavam on Monday, was taken around the mada streets in a grand procession before finally handing over to the authorities.
