Volunteers assist elderly and physically-challenged devotees

Policemen came forward to volunteer at the Kanaka Durga temple and assisted the elderly and physically-challenged devotees round the clock.

Sporting a T-shirt and cap, many Bhavani Seva Dal police cheerfully assisted pilgrims atop the Indrakeeladri hill.

The Bhavani Seva Dal, launched by Police Commissioner Ch. Dwaraka Tirumala Rao, began volunteering during last year’s Dasara festivities.

Mr. Tirumala Rao, who visited the temple, asked the police to be courteous and serve the devotees with patience. Bhavani Seva Dal volunteers can use wheelchairs to shift physically-challenged persons and senior citizens to enable a hassle-free darshan for them, the Police Commissioner said.

The volunteers distributed water and buttermilk packets to devotees standing in queues, particularly on ‘Mula Nakshatram’ day on Saturday, where there was a heavy rush at the temple.

“Bhavani Seva Dal has been created to help devotees during the nine-day utsavams. We are receiving positive feedback from devotees on the services of the seva dal,” a police officer said.

“Normally, police are seen controlling crowds with batons. But here, it is refreshing to see them in a new light, serving devotees with a smile,” said a devotee named S. Nayana who came from Kavali in Nellore district.
