District Education Department and the Rural Organisation for Poverty Eradication Services (ROPES) jointly organised ‘Aksharabhyasam’ event at the famous temple of Lord Moghileeswara Swami at Moghili, 30 km from here on Friday.
Over 600 children in the age group of 3 to 8 years thronged the temple premises along with parents from all over Bangarupalem mandal and surrounding areas and took initiation of learning.
Participation of
school dropouts
The ROPES had distributed slates, books and stationery to the children, who were initiated to write the Telugu alphabets on the rice spread evenly on the floor, and chant ‘Om Namah Shivaya.’ The event also saw the participation of school dropouts.
The temple priests blessed the children and made them utter Telugu alphabets and prayers, while parents and teachers broke coconuts at the temple. The parents and children later took part in the community lunch.
Backward western mandals
ROPES chairman, Dr K. Dhanasekharan said that the organisation had been undertaking the mass learning process for the poor and downtrodden children of the backward western mandals of the district for the last one decade.
Unique feature
Mandal Educational Officer (MEO) Subramanyam Naidu said that unique feature of ‘Aksharabhyasam’ event was that it was being organised in Bangarupalem mandal alone with the assistance of philanthropists and voluntary organisations. “The response of parents and voluntary organisations is extraordinary. Awareness programmes and door-to-door campaigns were launched in the villages to send their children to government schools, and to bring back the school dropouts,” he said.
