Terming the protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for being non-committal on the Special Category Status (SCS) issue as a needless controversy being raked in by the Opposition parties, Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana on Sunday asserted that the State was sure of getting more than what was promised in the AP Reorganisation Act.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who himself heads the NITI Ayog’s sub-panel, is striving hard to get the special status and a special package for Andhra Pradesh, by using his good offices with the Centre, he told the media here.

“The Niti Ayog is examining the issue (SCS) and its report is expected in the next 15 days,” he said.

Unable to digest the grand success of the foundation stone laying ceremony of Amaravati, the Opposition parties were trying to mislead the people, he observed, adding that the Centre had already sanctioned 11 educational institutions as promised in the AP reorganisation Act of which some had already started functioning.

Taking strong exception to the Matti Satyagaraham programme announced by the Congress, Mr. Narayana said: “It was the same party (Congress) which had ensured the passage of the State Reorganisation Bill hastily without including the provision of SCS in it, amid a TV blackout. And now, its leaders are championing the cause for political gains.”
