Now, it’s Polavaram project, officially

June 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The multi-purpose Indira Sagar (Polavaram) project has been rechristened as Polavaram irrigation project, according to the orders issued by the State government here on Thursday.

The multi-crore project was launched during the Congress regime with late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy as the Chief Minister and was named Indira Sagar Project.

Renaming of the project has been on the cards ever since the TDP government took over the reins in the State as several leaders wanted the project to be named after the party’s founder and former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao. Deputy Chief Minister K.E. Krishnamurthy was the first to suggest renaming the Indira Sagar Project as Tarakarama Sagar after the name of NTR during whose tenure the project was first contemplated.

The government has earlier renamed the Indira Jala Prabha, the pet programme of the previous Congress regime with an aim of supplying irrigation water for 10 lakh acres, as the NTR Jala Sri. Further, the Rajiv Arogya Sri scheme was rechristened as the NTR Arogya Seva. The move to rename Shamshabad International Airport in Hyderabad after NTR evoked protests. But, the government could manage to rename the domestic terminal at the airport after NTR.
