State Mahila Commission Chairperson Nannapaneni Rajakumari assured the victims of an auto driver at Bobbili of relief from the Commission as well as from the state government. She called on the two sisters, who were recovering at the district headquarters hospital, here on Saturday.
The victims informed her that they hired an auto late on Wednesday evening at Bobbili for going to their home at Komatipalli. On their way home, the auto driver ‘misbehaved’ with them. When they resisted he smashed their heads with an iron rod that he was carrying and fled the scene. One of the sisters was married recently and resides in Eluru (West Godavari) and the other works in a firm in Hyderabad.
They visited their native place for Deepavali.
Condemning the incident, Ms. Rajakumari asked Superintendent of Police G. Pala Raju, who was present at the press conference at Z.P. Guest House, to act tough on auto drivers, who have a record in police stations.
Mr. Pala Raju informed her that 69 auto-rickshaws out of 23,000 in the district were seized so far and their driving licences were being cancelled.
Further, he said that 11 cases were pending against the accused auto driver Naresh at police stations at Rajam (Srikakulam district), Bobbili, Gajapathiangaram and Vizianagaram. He said that a case under PD Act was being initiated against the auto driver besides attempt to murder and molestation.
He said that a proposal was sent to the RTA to cancel his driving licence.
Joint Collector Srikesh B. Lathkar said that compensation under Nirbhaya Act would be given to the victims in addition to houses under NTR housing scheme.
