NALCO’s Vizag plans stand: Union Minister

Union Minister of State for Mines Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary on Monday said the National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO) had not shelved its proposal for bauxite mining and investment on alumina refinery complex in Visakhapatnam district.

Replying to a question raised by YSR Congress Party MP V. Vijaya Sai Reddy in the Rajya Sabha, the Minister said the Government of India on the recommendation of A.P. had accorded approval for the bauxite blocks in the State way back in September 2009.

Current position

On the latest development, Mr. Chaudhary said NALCO had submitted applications to the Centre in May 2017, for reservation of Jerrela bauxite deposits (block-I, 2, 3 and 8) in Visakhapatnam district.

It submitted another proposal for allotment of Gudem bauxite deposits and Kataraju Konda deposits in September, 2017 under sub-section 1A of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957.

As per the Samata judgment, an undertaking owned or controlled by the State or the Central Government is eligible to undertake mining in scheduled areas.

To a question whether the ministry was planning to go ahead in considering the requests made by NALCO, the Minister replied in the affirmative.
