NALCO keen to double capacity by 2026: CMD

‘Listing on London Metal Exchange is one of major achievements’

National Aluminum Company Limited Chairman and Managing Director Tapan Kumar Chand said that NALCO was keen to double its production within seven years and wanted to become one of the global leaders in Alumina production. He said that the company’s capacity was 4.6 million tonnes currently and it had targeted to achieve 1.1 billion tonnes by 2026. Mr. Chand, who worked as a director in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, came to Kothavalasa of Vizianagaram district to interact with physically challenged persons who were provided artificial limbs by Sri Gurudeva Chairtable Trust.

In an exclusive interview to The Hindu , he said that the company had registered ₹11,386 crore turnover in 2018-19 and earned ₹1,732 crore profit.

“In spite of challenges in the economy, NALCO continues to perform well with the concerted efforts of the entire team. That is why, it could perform well in the international market. Listing on the London Metal Exchange is one of the major achievements,” said Mr. Chand.

According to him, NALCO achieved distinction of being the lowest cost producer of bauxite in the world in 2018 as per the report of Wood Mackenzie. The company’s export earnings accounted for about 43% of the total sales turnover. It has been giving top priority for capacity utilisation and technology absorption in all of its units. NALCO is concentrating on renewable energy too by establishing solar and wind power units in Odisha and other places. “Currently, NALCO is producing 198 mw power under renewable energy category. Its capacity will be doubled very shortly as it is keen to establish many more projects as part of promoting clean and green energy,” he added.
