‘MV Act amendment will imperil workers’

August 04, 2018 01:13 am | Updated 01:13 am IST - KAKINADA

Members of transport unions under the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) staged a dharna at the Transport Department’s office here on Friday demanding that the Centre withdraw the proposed amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, as it would benefit corporates at the cost of workers.

Addressing workers, vice-president of the CITU’s city unit Palivela Veerababu said, “It is unfair on the part of the government to hold drivers responsible for road accidents and make them pay hefty fines besides or send them to jail. Who will be held responsible for the bad maintenance of roads and conditions of vehicles?”

Grim scenario

He said the transport sector was already facing a crisis owing to the increasing diesel prices. “The amendments will help corporate firms take over the sector,” he said.

Later, a representation was submitted to the department’s officials.
