Shias on Saturday observed Muharram here on Saturday and took out a ‘Matam’ procession commemorating the sacrifice of Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad and his companions in the battle of Karbala in Iraq.

Special prayers

Attired in black, the members of the Shia community offered prayers at the Panjas across the town since late on Friday night. Women also joined the procession in large numbers.

The Machilipatnam Municipality had made necessary arrangements such as provision of water and etc for the mourners during the ‘Matam’ procession, who resort to self-flagellation to remember the sacrifice of the Prophet’s grandson and his companions.

Excise and BC Welfare Minister K. Ravindra and Machilipatnam Municipal Chairperson M. Baba Prasad were among those present on the occasion.
