Modi to lay stone for FCIL plant revival

The fertilizer unit at Ramagundam has been defunct for more than 15 years

October 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:53 am IST - Hyderabad:

The foundation stone of the over Rs. 5,000-crore project to revive the Ramagundam unit of the Fertilizer Corporation of India Ltd (FCIL) is likely to be laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December.

Of the eight fertilizer plants that remain closed in the country, the Centre has decided to revive four and the facility in Telangana is one of them, Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said on Tuesday. The Prime Minister is likely to lay the stone, the Minister told members of trade and industry body Federation of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry here.

Clear signs about revival of the Ramagundam plant, defunct for more than 15 years now, came earlier this year when Fertilizers Corporation of India Limited, National Fertilizers Ltd and Engineers India Ltd signed a joint venture agreement. Their consortium was approved by the Union Cabinet, based on a decision of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in August 2011 to revive the plant on a nomination basis. This, however, will not be the first attempt to revive the plant.
