‘Central government has helped Visakhapatnam a lot’

Alleging that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu was hell-bent on showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a poor light, BJP senior leader Somu Veerraju on Wednesday said it would boomerang on the TDP, resulting in its rout in the coming elections.

Claiming that Visakhapatnam stood to immense gain from the assistance from BJP-led Centre, he said, “Be it development of highways, LED lighting or Smart City initiative, Visakhapatnam remains a major beneficiary. But, Mr. Naidu has failed to take note of it. The International Fleet Review (IFR) for which ₹ 200 crore was spent also helped develop of the city on many counts.

Direct funds to panchayats

“Mr. Modi has empowered the sarpanches with the direct release of funds. The State’s share in the Central proceeds has also increased from 32 % to 42 % during the BJP rule,” he told the media here.

Crores of rupees were being spent on promoting the progress of Polavaram project while the the Amaravati project was confined to the presentations in rooms, the BJP leader said.

In response to the HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao’s claim that ₹ 1.25 lakh crore was spent on education, he said, “Private schools are flourishing in the State. A large scale of irregularities came to light in getting the school uniforms stitched and whitewashing of schools.”
