Modi destroying Centre-State relations, says Yechury

‘The Prime Minister is making legislation by making a mockery of Parliament’

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury has accused the Narendra Modi government of destroying the Centre-State relations.

Inaugurating a national seminar on ‘The World of EMS’ at Elamkulam, near Perinthalmanna, on Saturday, Mr. Yechury said the BJP government’s denial of funds to the States and its intervention in the powers of Delhi government had badly affected the relations between the States and the Centre.

Mr. Yechury criticised the Prime Minister for refusing to meet eight Chief Ministers of north Indian States who wrote to him seeking Plan funds.

“Mr. Modi has done away with the Planning Commission. He is making legislations by making a mockery of Parliament,” he said.

The CPI(M) leader said that Modi was busy visiting countries which had denied him visas. Farmer suicide was on the rise in the country and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was trying to portray it as a curse, he said.

“Instead of addressing the problems of the poor, Mr. Modi is focussing on the propagation of yoga. Yoga is good for health. But how does it help 194 million poor people in the country?” he asked.

Mr. Yechury said the country needed an ideological union of the Left parties.

Such a union, he said, was needed to fulfil the ideologies put forth by E.M.S. Namboothiripad against capitalism and terrorism.

He said EMS was involved in all issues affecting society. The relevance of his ideologies has increased today, he said, accusing the United Democratic Front (UDF) government in the State of destroying political morality by resorting to corruption.

CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan delivered the EMS memorial lecture. He said EMS had led the State to prosperity in all sectors.
