Mobile towers radiation under check, say Chittoor Police

January 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - CHITTOOR:

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), M. Lakshmi Naidu, on Friday said that the radiation level from cellphone towers in Chittoor town and its surrounding areas was well under permissible limits and appealed to people not to be panicky over the ill effects from the towers.

The DSP, accompanied by a team of officials from the Cellular Operators Association of India and the representatives from the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, inspected the cellphone towers in the town. The team used German-made Specified Radiation Measurement (SRM) meter to record the radiation at the busy Gandhi Bomma Centre. After inspection, the DSP said that the radiation recorded in Chittoor was just 2.8 MW, while the government had permitted the radiation level at below 1000 MW.

He said that ever since the government had mooted extending 4G facilities and broadband connections to rural areas, more than 15 towers had been erected in the district, amid protests from people, who expressed fear over the ill-effect of radiation from these towers.

The radiation recorded in Chittoor is 2.8 MW, when compared to the permissible level of 1,000 MW
