Minister puts privatebus operators on notice

‘RTC operating special services to beat Dasara rush’

Transport Minister Perni Venkataramaiah on Sunday warned private bus operators against fleecing passengers.

He said there was a sudden increase in the number of passengers due to the festival season and the ongoing strike by the Telangana RTC. Stringent action would be taken against private operators if they tried to take advantage of the situation by charging more than the stipulated rate.

The Minister said 800 special buses had been pressed into service by the AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) till date. Additional buses from Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru were being operated towards various destinations in Andhra Pradesh, he added.

He said a fine of ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh would be imposed on operators violating norms and after the festival, the government would thoroughly review the situation.

Official deployed

To ensure a smooth ride for the passengers, an officer of the rank of executive director in the APSRTC had been deployed in Hyderabad. Depending on the need, more buses would be pressed into service, he said.

In a separate statement, Transport Commissioner P. Seetharamanjaneyulu said surprise checks were being conducted and officials had been asked to impose heavy fines on erring operators. He wanted the officials to make sure that the inspections did not cause any inconvenience to the public.

Fines were collected from 179 bus operators on October 4 and from 172 operators on October 5, he said, adding that eight vehicles were confiscated for operating in violation of rules.
