In a freak mishap, a man was killed and his accomplice suffered serious burns on Kanaka Durga Varadhi at Tadepalli here on Thursday morning.

The man identified as Yelagala Seetharam, a resident of Guntur, was working with Reliance Communications office in Vijayawada. The incident took place when the duo was heading towards Vijayawada to report for work at the Reliance 4G communication services.

In their attempt trying to overtake a car, the bike hit the footpath. As it screeched on the road, a can of turpentine oil used for painting the footpath spilled on the bike, leading to a spark. Soon the fire engulfed the duo.

While, Seetharam, who suffered serious burns, died on the spot, his accomplice Narayana Swamy was rushed to a hospital.

Guntur North DSP G. Ramakrishna said that the accident occurred due to rash and negligent driving, adding that warning boards had been put up on the bridge since the maintenance works began here.
