A 55-year-old man, accused of raping a nine-year-old girl at Dachepalli village, has committed suicide, DGP M. Malakondaiah said here on Thursday.

The body of Annam Subbaiah was found hanging from a tree outside Amaralingeswara Swamy Temple at Daida village in Gurazala. Police had formed 17 teams to nab Subbaiah, who has been on the run for the last 48 hours.

The police have sent the body to post mortem. The DGP said that the exact timing of his death would be known once the post mortem report is released.

Relatives of the rape victim said that they were not satisfied. “We wanted to teach the man a lesson so that none would dare to do such acts against children,” said a close relative of the girl’s family.

Meanwhile, Dachepalli town remained tense till afternoon. Minister for Home N. China Rajappa, DGP M. Malakondaiah, District Collector Kona Sasidhar and Superintendent of Police Ch. Venkat Appalanaidu visited the village and tried to pacify the agitators.

In Guntur, dramatic scenes were witnessed at GGH where a group of YSRCP members led by party MLAs RK Roja and SK. Mustafa were taken into preventive custody by the police, minutes before Home Minister and DGP visited the hospital. The MLAs were demanding that the Chief Minister to take responsibility for the episode.
