The Government General Hospital in Anantapur is witnessing a rise in women patients suffering from pregnancy complications arising due to malnutrition, with seven cases of Peripartem Cardiomyopathy being reported in February alone.

At a press conference here on Saturday, GGH Superintendent A. Jagannath said for the past few months the number of cases have been on the rise, but this month it was the highest. This complication may not be rare among pregnant women, but shows that more awareness is needed among pregnant women to avoid this situation right from the early stages of pregnancy, he observed.

Citing the example case of 25-year-old Fakeeramma, who was brought to the GGH from Gooty government hospital by Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANM), with 46% of oxygen saturation and 24% of heart pumping efficiency, the Superintendent said a multi-disciplinary team of doctors attended on her and not only managed to revive her but also performed a Caesarean section to extricate the dead foetus.

Ms. Fakeeramma from Muppalagurthi, Peddavadaguru mandal, was put on ventilator support for three days from February 13 to ensure her revival. Five hours from the time she was admitted into the GGH, it was a tense situation for the team of doctors. Thirteen days after, Ms. Fakeeramma was nursed back to normal.

While the World Health Organisation (WHO)-approved number of Caesarean operations was 11 in 1,000 deliveries, at GGH the Caesarean operations account for 35% of cases, said Dr. Jagannath.
