Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan on Monday asked the people to own the Neeru-Chettu programme which was aimed at benefiting not just individuals, but the community as a whole.

“The State government has taken up Neeru-Chettu for water conservation, improve groundwater table to make the state drought-proof within five years. This flagship programme should be converted into a people’s movement”, he said.

The Governor participated in Neeru-Chettu Programme at Kapavaram in Korukonda mandal, 30 km away from the city, as part of the two-day visit to East Godavari district. Speaking to mediapersons the Governor said he was told by Collector H. Arun Kumar that repairs would be taken up for 45 tanks and the irrigation department would take up maintenance of canals, reservoirs, lift irrigation schemes, check dams and de-silting of tanks in a campaign mode across the district in the next five months.

He said this was a good programme and would increase the capacity to store rain and surface water in all villages.

Earlier, Mr. Narasimhan was received at R&B guesthouse by Rajahmundry Mayor P. Rajani Sesha Sai, MLAs Akula Satyanarayana, G. Butchaiah Chowdary, Eluru Range DIG Harikumar, Urban SP S. Harikrishna and others.

The Governor visited Pushkara Ghat and Kotilingala, Saraswati ghat which are under construction and gave suggestions.

He left for Korukonda and had darshan of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swami, which is one of the popular pilgrim centres in the district along with his wife and then proceeded to Kakinada for night halt.
