One of the latest catheterisation laboratory equipment for neurological, cardiological and radiology interventions has been installed in a hospital in the city. According to interventional cardiologist M. Vamsi Krishna this reduces harmful radiation by 60% and gives the doctor a clear view of the portion he/she is working on.
Sophisticated equipment
At a press conference here on Wednesday, representatives of Japanese angiography equipment maker Shimadzu said a catheterization laboratory (cath lab) needs a sophisticated diagnostic imaging equipment to visualize the arteries of the heart and the chambers to treat any stenosis or abnormality found. “In this process, interventional cardiologists and supporting technical staff get exposed to X-Ray radiation, which leads to the onset of cancer,” said Shimadzu Director Hiroyuki Nishida.
Explaining about the equipment Dr. Vamsi Krishna said it has next generation image processing engine that allows the cardiologist to work on the patient even without the presence of a Cath Lab technician through some pre-fixed positions.
“Moreover, it removes all the difficulties faced by doctors while closing a hole in the heart, placing a stent or fixing a pacemaker, through some software, making the equipment extremely motion tolerant providing advanced 3D applications for complicated interventions,” said Dr. Vamsi Krishna, adding patients had to go to either Bangalore or Hyderabad for this till now.
