Lok Satta slams State on cotton purchase

Lok Satta founder president Jayaprakash Narayan on Saturday lashed out at the Andhra Pradesh Government for remaining indifferent even as Cotton

Corporation of India (CCI) officers allegedly looted about Rs. 1,000 crore by purchasing cotton through middlemen at throwaway prices and not at designated CCI purchase centres.

Farmers in Andhra Pradesh cultivated cotton in 19 lakh acres during 2014-15. As production was 1.5 lakh quintals, the market price was only Rs.2,800-3,200 per

quintal. Though 43 purchase centres were set up in Kurnool, Prakasam, Guntur, West Godavari and Srikakulam districts, CCI officials did not purchase cotton from farmers at the support price but bought it in villages through middlemen for Rs.2,800-3,2000.

In the records, however, they showed that the cotton was purchased for a support price of Rs. 4,050 at CCI centres.

They purchased 90 lakh tonnes through brokers, and only three lakh tonnes at CCI centres, he said.
