Legislature working on ‘e-petitions’ system

Common people can also petition the Legislature through the new system

July 02, 2012 11:50 pm | Updated 11:50 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

The State Legislature is actively working on introduction of yet another innovative scheme, “e-petitions,” a system providing for online submission of petitions/representations.

Considered the first-of-its kind feature in the country, the e-petitions will not be restricted to the members of the two Houses.

Common people seeking remedies for the problems they face in their constituencies can also petition the Legislature through the new system.

Separate portal

The new system will be put in place as a separate portal in the Assembly website where the constituents of the respective members can register their grievances online. The basic framework of the new system is already evolved.

Sources said efforts are under way to make e-petitions system fool-proof which will mandate addressing concerns like the infringement on the rights of the members before it is officially launched.

As e-petitions will give scope for common people to register their grievances, Legislature officials are working in coordination with IT experts on setting up a filtration mechanism to ascertain the genuineness of the petitioners.

Another area under examination is whether the respective member should be informed about grievances from his/her constituency, whether they should be referred to the Petitions Committee of the Assembly or allow the petitions to go directly to the department concerned,” a senior official told The Hindu .

In-depth study of the system was under way to avoid troubles in future. “It is a sensitive and critical issue and needs to be dealt with utmost caution,” the official said.
