Krishna Collector A.Md.Imtiaz on Sunday said that at least 14 locations had been identified for cleaning various canals of the River Krishna in and around Machilipatnam town on Monday.

Speaking to newsmen here, Mr. Imtiaz said machinery had been arranged for the canal clean-up drive, apart from a good number of volunteers from various organisations.

Notices to hospitals

In the second phase of Nenusytham initiative, Naguleru canal, Bandar and Ryves canals at Tarakaturu and Manginapudi beach were the prime locations where all the plastic waste would be cleared on Monday. On the findings of the first phase, Mr. Imtiaz revealed that many hospitals had been found releasing bio-waste and untreated plastic materials into the canals of the River Krishna in and round Vijayawada.

“Notices have been served on various stakeholders, including hospitals which are polluting the canals of the River Krishna by releasing various waste materials. Lack of dumping and drainage facilities in various villages along the river course is also said to be the reason for throwing of the plastic waste into the canals,” said Mr. Imtiaz.

“An action plan will be prepared to keep the canals clean as they are the prime source for drinking water in Krishna district. The locations such as Manginapudi beach will also be maintained without any plastic waste,” said Mr. Imtiaz.

The Machilipatnam Urban Development Authority has been roped in to monitor the Nenusytham programme here.
