Former Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Agarala Eswara Reddi has squarely blamed the Congress for declaring emergency and called it a result of the ‘JP movement’.
The stupendous response to the ‘Refuse to obey Indira’ call given by Jayaprakash Narayan, considered the Gandhi of Independent India, had played a key role in mobilising public opinion against the incumbent government, he said.
Sharing his musings over what he called the ‘darkest period’ in the post-independent Indian political scenario with The Hindu , the octogenarian legislator dubbed the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as a ‘power hungry woman’ who imposed the Emergency to safeguard her own political and personal interests.
“And the only beneficiary of this unfortunate period was her son Sanjay Gandhi, who masterminded the atrocities committed during the period,” said Dr. Reddi, who represented the party in the seventies.
However, he called ‘Maruti Car,’ the affordable indigenous car, as a positive contribution by Sanjay Gandhi to the nation.
