YSR Congress president Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy will begin an indefinite fast in Chanchalguda Prison from Sunday demanding that the Centre maintain status quo if it cannot render justice to all regions in the event of dividing the State.

His protest comes in the wake of the police forcing party honorary president Y.S. Vijayamma to break her fast in Guntur in the early hours of Saturday. Party senior leaders – Konathala Ramakrishna, Bhuma Nagi Reddy and Dharmana Krishnadas met Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy in the jail to apprise him of the political developments.

“If we do not react when we have to, the State will turn into a desert and to avoid such a situation, I will be undertaking the fast,” Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy was quoted as telling party leaders. The Kadapa MP expressed concern over recent developments and took offence to the way Vijayamma was evicted from her deeksha venue late in the night. “I will pick up the fast from where she left and begin an indefinite fast tomorrow,” Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy told the three leaders. Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy targeted TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu for being silent on the division of the State and refusing to take back the letter given to the Centre. The three leaders said the Kadapa MP was the people’s leader and would begin his fast despite being away from people and in judicial remand. “Very soon Sharmila will also undertake a bus yatra,” Mr. Ramakrishna told reporters.
