Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal off West Bengal and Odisha coasts, a low pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood.

As part of the system, an associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above the mean sea level tilting south-westwards.

Under its influence, heavy rain is expected over coastal Andhra Pradesh, and in Kothagudem and Khammam in Telangana, during the next 24 hours.

While it started raining heavily in Visakhapatnam from Sunday evening, Krishna district had been experiencing rain since Saturday. Vijayawada city recorded a rainfall of about 6 cm.

Low-lying areas hit

As per the weatherman, rough to very rough sea conditions are likely to prevail over A.P., West Bengal and Odisha coasts. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea.

“Due to the system, coastal Andhra Pradesh may receive heavy rain of up to 12 cm to 14 cm,” officials of India Meteorological Department (IMD) say. Following the sudden and steady downpour in Visakhapatnam, low-lying areas such as Allipuram, Gnanapuram, Poorna Market, and Yellammathota were inundated.
