Hike in water charges mooted

Authorities plan to bridge the gap between revenue and delivery cost

January 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:54 am IST - ELURU:

Regional Director of the Department of Municipal Administration and Urban Development, V. Rajendra Prasad, on Tuesday proposed the revision of water charges in the municipal towns to help the local bodies bridge the widening gap between the revenue and delivery cost.

At a review meeting with the Municipal Commissioners from East Godavari, West Godavari and Krishna districts aiming at motivating the civic bodies to mop up revenues by upward revision of water tariff, property rates and the charges for delivery of citizen services, Mr. Rajendra Prasad highlighted the need for revision of the tariffs, in consultation with the respective elected bodies.

Mr. Prasad observed that drinking water was being supplied at a throwaway price in municipal towns in the region.
