Heavy rains lashed many parts of the State on Saturday night, snapping the communication links and causing extensive damage to standing crops. Three women were washed in rivulets in the rain-related incidents.

More rain predicted

The officials at the Cyclone Warning Centre in Visakhapatnam said the cloud cover was significant and the north-east monsoon had been fairly active over the region that caused the rainfall. The north coastal Andhra Pradesh would witness fairly wide spread rain or thunder showers in the next 24 hours.

According to reports, two women were washed away when they were crossing the in Eddu Vagu at Madugula village in Gurazala mandal of Guntur district on Sunday morning.

They have been identified as V. Radha (45) and B. Anusuya (50). In Kurnool district, a woman was washed away in Paleru river near Koilkuntla and Owk.

Meanwhile, 43 mandals in Kadapa district received heavy rain from Saturday night to Sunday morning. Peddamudiyam mandal received the highest rainfall of 88.4 mm, while all, 22 mandals received rainfall ranging from 30 mm to 80 mm.

Similarly, 50 mandals in Krishna district received an average rainfall of 42.5 mm. Heavy rains lashed Udayagiri and surrounding areas in Nellore district. In Udayagiri alone, nearly 214 mm rainfall was recorded on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, district officials said that Experts Committee consisting of Subba Rao, Rosaiah and Veeraiah Chowdary would visit Nellore district in the next two weeks to verify the condition of irrigation canals. This is part of the government’s plans to ensure better management of water resources at the field level. In Prakasam district, rains came at the most opportune time to provide life-saving irrigation to standing crops in over 2 lakh hectares.
