he two-day Hackathon on Smart Cities got an enthusiastic turnout.

The Hack Mania 2015 organised jointly by the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, Visakhapatnam chapter, Andhra University Computer Centre, and Startup Moksha got under way at the IETE building here on Saturday.

The 24-hour coding marathon requires participants come and code their ideas to solve the given problem. The best solution that can be converted into a product would get incubated at the Startup Moksha.

“This is a part of a regular hackathon we are planning to conduct such events at regular intervals,” CEO of Startup Moksha T. Vasudeva Rao told The Hindu.

“In fact it would be good if we can organise such events on a fixed day of the month like a second Saturday or a fourth Saturday,” Professor in Department of Computer Science in AU Engineering College (Autonomous) and director AU Computer Centre V. Valli Kumari suggested.

The hackathon is basically meant to give the students an exposure to problem solving. At the event they have to come together as a team, do brainstorming and finally arrive at a workable solution and a prototype developed, Mr Vasu explained.

“The interactions with others during the course of the event helps in clearing doubts and hastens the design and development of solutions,” he said. This is another skill acquired which would be useful for the student both as an entrepreneur and as an employee.

More to follow

Startup Moksha has conducted hackathons at IIT-D, IIT-H and BITS-HYD, among others. “The aim is to turn coding geeks into entrepreneurs. This is the first hackathon and we shall be conducting them at regular intervals. In a matter of a year we expect to have created sufficient number of coders interested in turning entrepreneurs or working in the startup which is a crucial prerequisite for a startup ecosystem,” he said.
