Stating that the government was keen on improving literacy rate, Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu on Monday said that efforts were on to expand libraries as literacy centres so that illiterates could learn reading and writing from the nearby libraries.

Laying the foundation stone for the construction of a public library at Netaji Park near MSN Charities here, Mr. Ramakrishnudu said that the State was lagging behind on literacy front as the literacy percentage was only 67. “The government is according top priority to education and health sectors. There is no dearth of funds for these two key sectors, he said.

Observing that libraries were major source of information for students from poor financial background who wish to appear for the competitive examinations, Mr. Ramakrishnudu said that infrastructure and facilities would be developed in the libraries. “Here we are going to construct a library with an expected outlay of Rs.1 crore, printed books and online books would be available for the public once this project is completed,” he said. Kakinada city MLA Vanamadi Venkateswara Rao presided over the meeting. Municipal Commissioner S. Govinda Swamy and other officials were present.
