GGH gives ‘Mission Smile’ a miss this year

Hospital officials cite fund crunch as reason

The annual ‘Mission Smile’ programme of the Government General Hospital (GGH) here may not take place this year because of lack of funds, say officials.

The GGH, in collaboration with several NGOs and corporations, has been conducting the programme in October every year since 2016. Under the programme, cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries are performed free of cost on children below the age of 14.

All expenses, which included pre-surgical care, accommodation, food, medicines and post-surgical care, are borne by the GGH and other partner organisations.

“In 2017, we had conducted the programme in partnership with Muthoot Pappachan Foundation. Specialists from across the State had performed 70 surgeries. However, arrangements have not been made this year due to lack of funds. Besides, the partner NGOs and corporations have not been finalised as yet,” said an official of the GGH.
