YSR Congress president Y.S Jaganmohan Reddy on Friday asked the party leaders and cadre to gear up for the municipal elections for Guntur Municipal Corporation, expected to be held in the second week of June.

Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy, who was here to attend the wedding of granddaughter of party senior leader Ummareddy Venkateswarlu, told senior leaders to galvanise the party for the elections.

In spite of losing Guntur West, Prathipadu Assembly constituencies, the party has wrested Guntur East segment consolidating its vote bank among minorities.

The party was already thinking about fielding a candidate from either the Kapu or the Vysya community for the post of Mayor and upset the chances of the ruling Telugu Desam.

The polls coming after a gap of five years were expected to be closely contested. The number of seats was also expected to go up in view of the amalgamation of neighbouring 12 villages.

Mr. Reddy asked party leaders Lella Appireddy and Sk. Mustafa to take part in agitations and raise issues concerning daily lives of people in a big way.

Earlier, Mr. Reddy unfurled the flag at the RTC Bus Stand Auto Union stand where he said the party had always stood to protect the rights of youth, workers and peasants.

Party district unit president Marri Rajasekhar and others were present at the meeting.
