A four-member gang, allegedly including three armed reserve police constables, were taken into custody for robbing several jewellers from Kavali off Rs. 82 lakh when the latter were travelling on the Navjeevan Express, on Thursday.

Three of the gang were taken into custody near Kanigiri in Prakasam district by the Nellore District Police. Search is on to nab the fourth member.

Kavali Rural Circle Inspector M. Madhu Babu told The Hindu that the traders were going to Nellore to make gold purchases.

The accused, masquerading as police, checked the belongings of the traders inside the train.

They enquired about the money the traders were carrying and wanted proof to confirm that the cash belonged to the jewellers.

The accused then forced the traders to get down at Nellore railway station and took them in a hired car and drove towards Gudluru. En route, they relieved the jewellers of the money and fled.

From Gudluru, the accused went to Kandukur in an auto-rickshaw, from where they hired another car to escape into the interior areas.

However, they were nabbed near Kanigiri in Prakasam district, Mr. Madhu Babu said.

Three members of the gang were stated to be AR constables belonging to Prakasam district, while the fourth one was a civilian.
