Gang ‘cloning’ ATM cards held in Nellore


₹7 lakh recovered from Haryana gang

Police busted an ATM card cloning racket with the arrest of a three-member gang from Haryana.

Superintendent of Police Aishwarya Rastogi told mediapersons here on Friday that ₹7.04 lakh was recovered from the accused Sandeep Kumar (32), Majeeth (29) and Jagjeeth (29) belonging to Bhiwani district in Haryana. Their involvement was detected in 49 cases, including 16 in Nellore district, eight each in Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam districts, seven in Anantapur distrit , four in Kurnool district , three cases in Guntur district and one in Prakasam district.

Explaining the modus operandi of the gangsters, the SP said the accused targeted elderly persons as also non-literates who had problems in withdrawing cash from the ATM. While helping them, the offenders allegedly swiped the ATM cards with a hand-held magnetic card reader device. Then they transferred the information through Bluetooth to their mobile phones, the SP explained.

Police also recovered from the offenders cloned ATM cards, laptops, mobile phones and a car used by them. Probe revealed that they were allegedly involved in over 1,000 such offences in several States in the country, the SP said and wanted the ATM users to be doubly careful while taking help from unknown persons for withdrawing cash.
