The Godavari, Krishna, Vamsadara and Nagavali rivers in the State which were in spate due to copious inflows for the last three weeks have affected 502 villages of 87 mandals in five districts – East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Srikakulam.

At least 60,727 people have been moved to relief camps after thousands of houses were flooded, according to Andhra Pradesh Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA).

The authority on Monday released a report of flood rescue and relief activities taken up by the government and the disaster response forces to minimise losses.

The Godavari floods occurred between July 30 and August 17 affecting West Godavari and East Godavari districts while Vamsadara and Nagavali floods occurred between August 7 and August 9 affecting Srikakulam district. In Krishna, the flood began on August 12 and is still on.

About 1,007 personnel of National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force and AP Fire Services have jointly formed teams and took part in rescue work, the release stated.

A huge number of 38,524 people took shelter at 114 relief camps in East Godavari though the number of affected villages, 154, was less than that of West Godavari where 239 villages were hit but only 1,873 people were sent to relief camps. In Srikakulam, flood inundated 10 villages and relief camps sheltered 3,297 people.

In Krishna and Guntur districts, where the first-level flood warning in Krishna river is continuing, as many as 99 villages of 33 mandals along the river course were affected. Hundreds of houses are still underwater and 17,033 (13,411 in Krishna and 3,622 in Guntur) took shelter at 64 relief camps so far. Most of them are still dependent on the camps. On the whole, 199 relief camps were set up during the flood relief operations in the State.

Inflows coming down

At 7 p.m. on Monday, the inflow into Prakasam Barrage was only 2.80 lakh cusecs and the discharge 4.67 lakh cusecs.

The outflow from the barrage would further fall as the outflows from the reservoirs upstream are quickly coming down. Srisailam, as of Monday evening, was receiving 3.87 lakh cusecs of water and letting out 1.64 lakh cusecs. The Nagarjuna Sagar dam was receiving 55,000 cusecs and letting out the same amount of water while the Pulichintala has an inflow of 2.99 lakh cusecs and outflow of 2.10 lakh cusecs.
