Forced marriages a reason for girls joining Naxal movement

And wedlock in movement a reason for coming out of it

Forced marriages causing girls to join Naxal movement

Early marriage or parents forcing their minor daughters to enter into wedlock without their consent leading to depression post marriage appear to be a reason for young women from the tribal areas of Visakhapatnam district joining the Maoist movement of late.

Thambelu Lakshmi alias Janaki and Pangi Shielu alias Latha, both 20 and hailing from interior villages of G-Madugula mandal, surrendered before the police on Monday and said they had left home to escape from such a predicament. And in the past one year, six women Maoists told the police so.

“We came into contact with some senior Maoists leaders who hailed from our villages and it was they who motivated us to join the movement,” they said.

The Maoists would always be on the prowl to identify such candidates as potential recruits, said Rahul Dev Sharma, SP.

Reason for surrender

We witnessed the phenomenon in the past too, said the SP. While forced marriage is one reason to join the movement, getting into relationship with a cadre or marrying a dalam member is a reason for their surrender.

Most of the women members join the movement at a very young age and sometimes even as minors. And if they fall in love with a dalam member they would surrender, the SP said.

As per the Maoist norms, marriage within the dalam members is not permitted and love affairs are viewed seriously.

There had been a number of cases where the leaders had asked them to surrender in such cases and in some cases they opted out to lead a normal life, said Mr. Rahul Dev Sharma.
