A couple, Vedadri Venkatanarayana Sarma (56) and his wife V. Sundari (50), reportedly committed suicide by jumping into Krishna River. Locals who noticed the bodies floating in waters on Tuesday alerted the police.
Natives of RTC Workshop Road in the city, Sharma and Sundari had one son – V. Subba Rao (35) -- who was unmarried and was suffering with back bone cancer. The couple was facing severe financial problems in bearing the expenses to provide treatment to their son, said West Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) S.V.N. Sivaram.
Mr. Sarma deposited Rs.6 lakh in Agri Gold and was eking out livelihood on the interest amount and other savings. Their problem was aggravated when the CID took the case and stopped transactions of the company for allegedly swindling money collected from some thousands of customers.
At around 2 a.m. the couple came to Bhavani Ghat and jumped into the river. The incident came into light in the early hours on Tuesday. A pall of gloom descended on the locality with the death of the couple.
The Bhavanipuram police registered a case and shifted the bodies to Government General Hospital for post-mortem, the ACP added.
