Farmer’s family tries to end life at govt. office

Distressed over discrepancies in their Pattadar passbooks, five members of a farmer’s family threatened to end their lives outside the Tahsildar’s office at Ramakuppam mandal in Chittoor district on Wednesday.

Babu Naik, a farmer from Tagarala Thanda hamlet, reached the Ramakuppam Tahsildar’s office along with his four other family members and raised slogans against the officials. Suddenly, all the five people tried to hang themselves from an iron gate.

Taken aback, officials alerted the Ramakuppam police, who rushed to the spot and convinced the family not to end their lives.

Softening their stance, Mr. Naik and his family squatted outside the office and accused the officials of wrongly issuing Pattadar passbooks pertaining to their lands to another person and failing to rectify the mistake despite lodging complaints.

The officials said they would resolve their issue within a couple of days after which the family relented and called off their protest.
