CPI national executive committee member K. Narayana on Wednesday said several farmers had committed suicide in the district, with many cases going unnoticed, because of the government’s failure to fulfil its promises. He was speaking during a dharna conducted by the party in front of the District Collectorate, demanding that the government implement its promise of loan waiver immediately.

Dr. Narayana said many a death in rural areas was directly or indirectly linked to the crisis in the farm sector. “This is the sixth consecutive drought that the district is facing. There is a dearth of everything in rural areas,” he said. He said people voted for the TDP expecting that their debts would be waived, but the indifference of the government had left farmers high and dry. The CPI leader demanded that the government implement all its promises including loan waiver for farmers and SHG women. “Impetus ought to be given to the growth of the farm sector, which will automatically improve the conditions of the rural economy,” he added.

Dr. Narayana and other party activists, who arrived at the venue on a bullock cart, blocked the entry to the Collectorate for some time, prompting police to swing into action and arresting the protesters.
