Care should be taken to ensure that not a single paise is collected from the end user, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy tells officials.

‘There should be a perceptible change in the situation in 60 days’

Officials will have a freehand in streamlining the supply of sand, but there should be a perceptible change in 60 days, Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has said.

“People should be able to clearly tell the difference between the functioning of the present government and the previous one,” Mr. Reddy said in a videoconference here on Tuesday.

Reviewing the Spandana programme with the district Collectors, the Superintendents of Police, and the heads of other line departments, the Chief Minister said that steps should be taken to drive out the sand mafia. Making several suggests to the top officials, the Chief Minister said that an official of the rank of the Joint Collector should be exclusively entrusted with the task of supervising sand supply.

Transportation

“Now that the floods have receded, there is abundant sand available. All sand reaches should be opened. Those who come forward to transport sand at the price fixed by the government (₹4.90 per km) should be given contracts,” Mr. Reddy said. Care should also be taken that not a single paisa was collected from the end user, he added. At least 2,000 youth from SC, ST, BC, minority and Kapu communities should be given loans in each district through their respective corporations for purchase of vehicles to transport sand, Mr. Reddy advised.

Asking the Collectors and the SPs to accord importance to the issue of sand supply, he said care should be taken to see that there was no smuggling of sand to other States. “Officials should be very strict with vehicles carrying sand at the check- posts,” the Chief Minister said. Minister for Panchayat Raj Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy, Chief Secretary L.V. Subrahmanyam, DGP Gowtham Sawang, and heads of other line departments attended.
