Crime rate dips in Anantapur in 2018

Offences against women, fatal accidents come down

The crime rate dipped in Anantapur district by 26% in 2018, as did crime against women and fatal accidents, according to the police.

Reviewing the annual performance of the police in the district, Superintendent of Police G.V.G. Ashok Kumar along with Assistant Superintendents of Police M.V.S. Swamy (OSD) and K. Choudeswari (Admin) here on Friday said that 5,981 criminal cases were registered this year as against 8,125 last year.

Traffic-related offences and accidents had registered a 37% reduction, said Mr. Kumar, adding that following the Supreme Court’s directive on traffic policing, fatal accidents had come down.

Last year, while 622 persons had died and 2,076 were injured in road accidents, 515 died and 1,193 were injured in accidents in 2018, marking a 17.20% reduction.

Faction crime and crime against women came down. But rape cases increased to 46 in 2018 from 44 last year. Dowry-related murders registered a 91% dip, dowry deaths a 27% dip and kidnaps a 42% dip this year.

Murders for gain reduced by 75%, dacoity cases by 40%, robberies by 91% and burglaries by 35% in 2018.
