A constable attached to the Governorpet police station was suspended and arrested on Saturday for allegedly extorting money from a jeweller’s driver in the police station recently.

Following a complaint lodged by a Tenali-based jeweller, the city police formed a team led by an ACP, investigated the case and arrested the constable, Vishnu, under Sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 384 (punishment for extortion) of IPC and section 13 of Prevention of Corruption Act. Also, Governorpet Circle Inspector P.E. Pavan Kumar Reddy was transferred to vacancy reserve as a disciplinary action by Commissioner of Police Dwaraka Tirumala Rao.

In a release, the police said that Vishnu and his friend allegedly apprehended the driver of the jeweller along with huge cash in the city on Thursday and took him to the police station. There, Mr. Vishnu allegedly demanded ₹5 lakh from the driver to keep the unaccounted money away from the notice of Income Tax officials. He reportedly took ₹50,000 more in the name of his higher officials.

Upon reaching Tenali, the driver told the jeweller about the bribe he gave to the constable inside the Governorpet police station.
