Short supply of coal has caused glitches in power generation, which is said to be the reason behind the power cuts during the evening hours.

Rain effect

Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company (APSPDCL), which supplies electricity to the eight southern districts of Andhra Pradesh, attributed the short supply of coal to duty boycott by staff in Mahanadi coal field as well as the heavy rains in Singareni and Thalcheru mines.

This cascaded to generation issues in thermal power plants.

“A shortage of 1100 MW on Friday and Saturday resulted in interruption in power supply,” Southern Discom’s Chairman and Managing Director H. Haranatha Rao stated in a release.

Though hydel power generation is high, solar and wind power are down in the evenings.

Procurement plan

The company is contemplating procuring electricity from power exchanges as per the instructions of the government to tide over the crisis, Mr. Haranatha Rao said.
