A 13-year-old girl on Monday committed suicide by consuming pesticide reportedly after being scolded by her family members for poor performance in studies at Guduru village in Krishna district.

Palanki Saritha, a class IX student at the Government High School in Guduru mandal headquarters, had reportedly taken the extreme step as her uncle Radhakrishna and other family members recently scolded her for poor performance in mathematics. Her parents died a few years ago and they were now being brought up by Mr. Radhakrishna at Ullipalem village.

Ms. Saritha has a brother, who is also studying class IX in the same school. On Monday, she reportedly consumed pesticide before attending the school and fell down in the class room.

The teachers initially admitted her to the Public Health Centre at Guduru, from where she was shifted to the Community Health Centre at Avanigadda. The doctors at the CHC, Avanigadda, declared her dead.

Complaint lodgd

Koduru SI Y. Sudhakar told The Hindu that Mr. Radhakrishna had lodged a complaint stating that Ms. Saritha was told to improve her studies with special focus on mathematics. “The doctors have confirmed that Ms. Saritha had consumed pesticide. A case has been registered and investigation is on. Ms. Saritha did not leave any suicide note,” Guduru SI Y. Sudhakar said.
