Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has said that his Ministry is examining a proposal to ask police officers to specialise in certain tasks of their professional duties after putting in 17 to 20 years of service.

Addressing the passing out parade of the 63rd batch of IPS trainees at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy here on Saturday, Mr. Chidambaram said the specialisation programmes for police were proposed to be developed in the areas of crime, law and order, traffic, security, intelligence, counter intelligence, terrorism, and counter terrorism.

He asked the faculty of the academy also to examine the proposal to develop leaders in police in their chosen fields. The Union Minister urged the trainee officers to keep pace with new methods, acquiring weapons, adopting technologies, updating training, and forging new alliances to deal with anti-national elements. The policing should become more specialised in the process, he added.

Advising them that life was not a linear path, he cautioned them about ups and downs, failures and successes and awards, and penalty as their career progressed.

New Director of the academy V.N. Rai said the Centre sanctioned Rs. 200 crore to develop the training infrastructure at the institution.

The proposed projects included acquisition of 400 acres for a satellite campus, construction of a new mess, establishment of national digital crime resource and training centre, urban shooting range, and state-of-the-art library. The largest ever batch of 134 trainee officers, including 21 women, passed out this year. There were four officers each of the Royal Bhutan Police and Maldives Police Service and three of Nepal police.

Mr. Chidambaram presented the Prime Minister's baton and Home Ministry's revolver for best all round performance to Paris Anil Deshmukh of Rajasthan cadre, who was also the parade commander.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy called on Mr. Chidambaram here on Saturday.
