Chaos reign, five hurt in mild stampede

Power was cut to the locality after the fire broke out. Frightened by the deafening sound of the blast, pilgrims going to the Pushkar Ghat to see the daily Godavari Harati show ran helter skelter. Chaos reigned for a while as police and fire personnel rushed in followed by the CM’s convoy and TV crews. A mild stampede took place, in which five received minor injuries, before police managed to cordon off the area.

The chairman and managing director of the Eastern Power Distribution Company Ltd, Revu Mutyalaraju said it was a burst of gas cylinders and not a transformer blowout that caused the fire. “We had installed new transformers in the entire district,” he said.

However, the owner of the eatery, Vasamsetti Gangadhar, a BJP leader, said the fire was not triggered by a cylinder blast in his restaurant. “There was no damage in any of the rooms in the hotel. If it was a cylinder blast, you would have seen some cracks in the walls,” he said.
