Forest officials in a quandary

Forest officials on Thursday seem to be a quandary over the death of a two-year-old leopard cub whose carcass was found at Maisammaloddi in Kawal beat under the Kawal Wilkdlife Sanctuary on Wednesday.

While Adilabad Conservator of forests B. Nalini Mohan ruled out the possibility of poaching, Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) A.K. Naik suspected poaching to be the cause of death.

Both the officials visited the place from where the burnt carcass of the leopard cub was recovered. Both held separate press conferences to announce their reading of the incident.

Mr. Nalini Mohan said the cub seems to have died of natural causes and later its carcass got burnt in the forest fire. The wildlife experts on the other hand suspect that the animal was a victim of poaching. The absence of nails made them all the more suspicious.

Mr. Naik said the remnants of the carcass would be sent for forensic examination. A case under the Wildlife Protection Act would also be booked, he added.
