Rotary Club, NTR Trust Blood Bank and APREDA have in coordination with various colleges in the fort town conducted a blood donation camp at Kakatiya Kalyanamandapam on Saturday.
Collector M.M. Nayak, who inaugurated the camp along with VUDA Vice-Chairman T. Babu Rao Naidu, appreciated voluntary organisations, doctors and college managements for their effort to meet the blood shortage.
To overcome the present shortage of 3,000 units in the district, awareness camps have to be organised throughout the district, he said.
Later, as part of national volunteer blood donor month, he reviewed the blood stock position with voluntary organisations, Red Cross, and doctors at his camp office. Mr Nayak suggested launching of website for transparency that would help people know about availability of blood, number of units collected from donors and sold in the district.
In addition to the existing five blood banks and four storage centres, more blood banks, if needed, would be opened and ID cards and incentives would be issued to student donors, he added.
District Leprosy and AIDS Control Officer D.S. Patnaik said 12,500 units of blood were being collected every year at the camps being conducted at regular intervals with the active participation of Indian Red Cross, Rotary and Lion’s Clubs. District Headquarters Hospital Superintendent Sitarama Raju, blood donors, motivators and others participated.
